In Loving Memory of Alex Bowie III
September 4, 1947 - November 13, 2024
Alex Bowie III, a distinguished United States Army veteran and gifted musician, departed this life peacefully at his home in Denham Springs, Louisiana, on November 13, 2024, at 77.
Born on September 4, 1947, to the late Alex Bowie II and Lucille Stewart Davis, Alex was a lifelong resident of New Orleans, Louisiana. He received his education at L.B. Landry High School and pursued his passion for music at Xavier University, where he specialized in trombone. His exceptional musical talent led him to become a respected member of the Algiers Brass Band, where it was often said that his ear was so finely tuned that he could identify the musical key of a dropped pin.
On August 11, 1969, Alex answered the call to serve his country, embarking on a distinguished 27-year career in the United States Army. As a sharpshooter (Rifle-14), he distinguished himself in Vietnam, Korea, and numerous locations worldwide. His dedicated service earned him multiple commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, before he received an honorable discharge.
Alex married Maria Smith during his military service, and their union was blessed with three children: Alex Bowie IV, Inez Michelle Bowie, and the late Benny Antonio Bowie. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who took immense pride in his family.
He leaves to cherish his memories his children Alex Bowie IV and Inez Bowie Savage; 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his siblings Russell Bowie, Wayne Bowie, Paul Peterson, Jacquelyn Bowie Williams, Rosalind Bowie Napoleon, Cassandra Bowie Cunnikin, and Charlene Davis and their spouses; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will deeply miss his presence in their lives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex Bowie Jr. and Lucille Davis; grandparents, Ervin and Julia Dunn; his son, Benny Antonio Bowie; and his beloved niece, Donya Bowie, and nephew, Christian.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
