With both gratitude and sorrow, we remember the remarkable life of Flora Lee Horton, who was called home on July 24, 2026, at The Crossing, having lived a full 85 years surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

Flora began her journey in Liberty, Mississippi, born on September 1, 1940, to Amos and Genora Bonds. She grew up in a close-knit family, later earning her diploma from Rosenwald High School in her hometown. Flora’s early life laid the foundation for her deep faith and generous spirit, hallmarks that would guide her every step. From a young age, she accepted Christ, and her words—"Take the Lord with you everywhere you go"—were cherished reminders that she not only spoke, but lived by every day.

Flora’s life was a quiet symphony of dedication, resilience, and elegance. Her professional years were spent caring for others as a devoted domestic worker, first with the Salmon family and then the Levine family, roles she performed with unwavering integrity until her well-earned retirement. In every task and each encounter, Flora’s gentle strength and steadfast character shone bright, earning admiration and affection wherever she went.

Those close to Flora remember her unwavering sense of humor and warmth. She had an infectious ability to keep everyone laughing and never failed to bring lightness and joy into the room. Her laughter was matched by her impeccable style—she loved dressing nicely and was known for her elegance and class. Shopping, exploring parks and the outdoors, and savoring meals at Olive Garden were simple joys she treasured, especially when shared with family. And above all else, spending time with her children and grandchildren was Flora’s greatest delight.

Flora was a steadfast woman of faith and took her role as Mother in the church to heart. She served as the Mother of Triumph—The Overcoming Church in Christ in New Orleans, Louisiana, before relocating to Baton Rouge and continuing her spiritual leadership as Mother at Faith Rock Christian Center. She approached these responsibilities with a seriousness and compassion that uplifted entire congregations, always encouraging others to "say what you mean and mean what you say." Her commitment to her faith also led her to become a beloved member of both the Golden Leaf Social and Pleasure Club and the Fischer Community Choir, enriching the lives of many with her kindness, grace, and generosity.

Among Flora’s proudest accomplishments were her cherished children and grandchildren, each of whom she considered a blessing and a source of limitless pride and love. Flora leaves behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and unwavering guidance for her surviving loved ones: her daughters Marilyn Gilbert, Jeanine Horton (Dwayne) Carter, and Mildred (Byron) Bailey; her grandchildren Angelica Gilbert, Tewyne Fleming, Shenita Seals, Yaschia Dilliard, Larry Andrews, Larrin Andrews, Rodney Horton, Sheena Horton, and Davona Ellis. Each carries her memory in their hearts, eternally inspired by her wit, her wisdom, and her enduring faith.

She now reunites in peace with those who preceded her in passing: her beloved husband Archie Horton; her parents Amos and Genora Bonds; her daughters Toni Horton McCoy and Terri Horton; her son Larry JH Horton; her sister Kathleen Sue Hilliard; and her brother Allen Cal. Their spirits are surely rejoicing to once again be near this remarkable woman.

The family and loved ones of Flora Lee Horton invite all who cherished her to celebrate a life supremely well-lived. A viewing is scheduled for August 7, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Bible World Christian Center, 1771 Lobdell Boulevard, Baton Rouge, LA 70806. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. She will rest eternally at Resting Place Memorial Garden, 14040 Locust St, Baton Rouge, LA 70819.

Flora’s life was a testament to the enduring power of faith, kindness, and truth. May her laughter echo in our memories, her lessons continue to guide us, and her love live on in those who hold her dear.
