Gregory Edwards, born on July 20, 1953, in Joliet, Illinois, to Sumner and Barbara Edwards, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Gregory's life journey was one filled with dedication, skill, and unwavering love for his family and community.
Gregory spent his formative years in Joliet and graduated from Joliet East High School. Early in his life, he embraced the joys and responsibilities of family life, marrying young and becoming the proud father of three daughters.
Choosing to serve his country, Gregory joined the US Navy, bravely serving during the Vietnam War. During his military career, he honed his skills as an electrician, a profession he would excel in for the rest of his life. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Joliet and continued his work as a talented electrician, joining the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). Gregory dedicated over fifty years to his profession before retiring.
Family was at the core of Gregory's life. He was a devoted son who lovingly cared for his parents until their passing. Gregory was a single father to the eldest of three daughters while providing love and fatherly support to them until he passed with them and his grandchildren by his side. One of his daughters followed in his footsteps of military service by joining the United States Air Force. All three daughters graduated from college and obtained advanced degrees, a testament to the values Gregory instilled in them.
Gregory's legacy of helping others extended beyond his immediate family. He was a pillar of support for numerous nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends, always ready to lend a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by his father Sumner Edwards, mother Barbara Edwards, brothers Tyrone Edwards, Sumner Edwards Jr., and Gerald Edwards, and sisters Vicki (Edwards) Beavers and Robin (Edwards) Allen.
Gregory is survived by his three daughters Artesia (Edwards) Cameron, Anitra (Edwards) Rodrigues (Dwayne Rodrigues), and Angela (Edwards) James (Derrick James); his sister Brenda (Edwards) Smith; grandchildren Gregory Cameron, Klaryce Hamilton, Larry English, Derrick James Jr., and Kiziah Cameron; great-grandchildren Grayson Farmer, Zola Cameron, Zeyda Cameron, and Joseph Hamilton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gregory Edwards will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his skilled craftsmanship, and his generous spirit. His daughters continue to honor his memory by carrying on his mission of helping others within the family and the community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Gregory's life will be held Friday July 18, 2025 at 9:00am at Resting Place Funeral Home 7840 Florida Blvd Baton Rouge, La 70806. Interment in Louisiana National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gregory's memory to Cash App $AnitraEdwards.
