Joyce Arlene Jackson Washington, a radiant light in her community and a nurturing soul to all who crossed her path, passed away on November 29, 2025, at the warm embrace of the Hospice of Baton Rouge Butterfly Wing. Born in Lutcher on January 23, 1951, she graced the world for 74 years with her elegance and a comforting spirit that enveloped her family and friends alike.
From a young age, Joyce was a dedicated caregiver, embarking on a meaningful career as a Certified Nursing Assistant in a nursing home. Her vocation reflected the very essence of her personality—a true nurturer, whose heart flowed generously with love and tenderness. Throughout her life, she exemplified grace, embodying a classy and artistic demeanor that was as uplifting as it was inspiring.
Joyce's love for her family was paramount. She shared a beautiful marriage with her husband, Alvin Washington, since 1971, a partnership that flourished into a loving family, including her children: Natasha, Delvin, Tyra, Jamie (Nicholas), Derrell (Shanada), Terrell (Kristie), and Tencia (Eric). Joyce found boundless joy in the lives of her 15 grandchildren, each one a unique piece of her heart: Kyristun, Kelly, Kiera , Savaiyah, Dante, Ethyn, Catherine, Angel, Aiden, Briana, Brennan, Xariah, Kingston, Valencio, and Eric Johnson Jr. Her pride in them was immeasurable, and she delighted in the small moments of togetherness and the laughter they shared.
An artistic spirit, Joyce immersed herself in the joys of cooking and baking and spending time with her family. She loved coloring and drawing, finding solace and expression within each brushstroke and pencil line. Her love of flowers blossomed alongside her nurturing nature; she found peace in tending to the blooms she received and was fond of keeping a prayer card of the Mother of Guadalupe and a depiction of the Virgin Mary close to her heart.
Joyce was deeply rooted in her faith, having accepted Christ at an early age. In her younger years, she proudly served as a deaconess and usher at The Greater King Triumph Baptist Church, further reflecting her dedication to her community and to spiritual service. She was surrounded by a vivid tapestry of beloved family and friends, including her siblings: Theresa (Charles), Paulette (Leroy), Marva (Wilbert), Bernadette Coleman, Bertha Joseph, Alice Johnson, Lori Robertson, Alberta Carter, Bobby Joyce Morgan, Valerie Dody, Diane Simon, Kathleen Gauthreaux, Lloyd Jackson, Rev Willie (Royale) Morgan Sr., Wilbert (Glenda) Diggs, Wilbert Morgan Jr., Burrell Joseph, and her brothers-in-law Ralph Washington and Kenneth Washington.
As we remember Joyce, we honor the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy grounded in love, kindness, and artistry. Though she is predeceased by her father Alexander Jackson Sr, mother Ethel Dody (Wilbert) Morgan, mother-in-law and father-in-law George and Louvina Washington Sr, one sister, four brothers, six sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, one grandchild, two nephews, and one great-niece, her spirit will continue to flourish within the cherished memories of those she held dear.
In this poignant farewell, we gather to celebrate her life on December 13, 2025, at the Bible World Christian Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We welcome all to join in a viewing starting at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM.
