Obituary

Mary Georgia Young

September 22, 1940 – October 29, 2026

“

Mary was a beautiful, proud woman of great strength and tremendous courage, and she cherished every moment of life she lived.

Mary Georgia Young, a native and resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, entered this world as a gift from the loving hands of God on September 22, 1940, and re-entered into those loving hands on October 29, 2026, at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.

Mary was a beautiful, proud woman of great strength and tremendous courage, and she cherished every moment of life she lived.

She was a wonderful daughter, a reliable sibling, a very loving mother and aunt, and a loyal friend and confidant to so many people.

She accepted Christ Jesus as her Savior and was baptized at a very young age. She loved the Lord with her whole heart and diligently sought to do His will by raising her children and family with great Christian values, instilling the fear of God in them, attending church faithfully, and being a blessing to others as God was to her.

She accepted Christ Jesus as her Savior and was baptized at a very young age.

Mary spent most of her lifetime in South Baton Rouge. She was a graduate of McKinley Senior High School.

Mary was gifted with a skill passed down from her mother, Beatrice Young—the gift of sewing. It was a skill she said would allow her to always be able to make a living for herself and her family, and indeed, it did.

Mary Young, as many would call her, was one of the best, if not the best seamstress in South Baton Rouge, North Baton Rouge, and all the surrounding areas.

This skill allowed her to meet and render services to so many great people, be they doctors, lawyers, district attorneys, judges, teachers, athletes, parents, and their families. The list goes on and on. But it was a gift she had been blessed with to share with others, and she did it exceptionally well.

She was employed by various alteration shops and cleaners and continued working until her retirement from Kean’s The Cleaner.

Mary had a life of many blessings. The love that was given and received from her children, family, friends, Pastor Henry and First Lady Brown, the First Emmanuel Baptist Church family, and all the people she met along the way were just a few of those many blessings.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Tonya “Missy” Young, Joy (Eddie) Williams, Tiffiny (Deatreous) Murray, Mark (Robin) Young, and Beatrice Young. She is also lovingly remembered by her niece, Sharon Young, her nephew, Claude Young, whom she loved as her own and helped raise, and her special great-niece, Keisha Houston. Also holding her close in memory is her dear friend Mary Cole Jones, a close friend who was like a sister to her. Together, these loved ones along with many other relatives and friends carry forward the warmth, candor, faith, and enduring love that shaped Mary’s life.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Kerry Young, Paul Young, Nelson Overton, and Anthony Overton; her great-grandchild, Bailey Clerk; her father, Aaron Young; her mother, Beatrice Yelder Young; her sisters, Evelyn Young, Rozelia McCoy, Francis LeDuff, and Carol Paul; and her brother, Wilbert Young.

Her life leaves an enduring impression on all who were blessed to know her.
