Nancy Striggs Claiborne, born on August 12, 1939, in Dutchtown, Louisiana, passed away on June 5, 2025, at Heritage Manor of Baton Rouge II. She lived a life vibrant with love, joy, and a profound devotion to her family and community. Growing up in Valley Park, Nancy became known not just for her caring nature but also for her beautiful voice that would often lift spirits through song.
A graduate of McKinley Sr. High School, Nancy dedicated her career to being a cook for the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board. Her culinary talents were only rivaled by her ability to share the gospel through music, a passion that resonated deeply within her soul. She was known to sing with a heart full of warmth, bringing joy and comfort to those around her.
Nancy cherished time spent at the casino, relishing moments of thrill and enjoyment. As a soloist, she embraced her love for singing, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to hear her sing. Her caring personality made her a beacon of support and love for her family, friends, and community.
Nancy was a beloved mother to her sons, James Bowie Jr. and Scottie DWayne Bowie, and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the cherished sister of Alberta Striggs and Joyce Moody Edwards. Her extended family included numerous nieces, nephews, and more relatives and friends who adored her and will forever hold her memory dear.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Striggs and Nellie Moody Striggs, her beloved husband Willie Claiborne, and her children—daughter Gloria Beverly and son Anthony Bowie. Nancy's legacy also includes her granddaughter Alexis Beverly, her brothers James Jackson and Willie Striggs Jr., and her sister Ida Striggs Jackson, all of whom have greeted her now in loving remembrance.
