Theresa Ezenwabasali

December 5, 1947 — October 26, 2025

Baton Rouge

With profound sorrow and deep gratitude, we celebrate the extraordinary life of Theresa Chinwe Ezenwabasili, born December 15, 1947, in Igbo Ukwu, Anambra, Nigeria. She departed this world on October 26, 2025, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the age of 78.

She leaves behind her beloved children: Celestine Ezeh, Rufina Umeozulu, Pamela Osuorah, Rosemary Eze, and Charles Ezeh, along with cherished grandchildren and a wide circle of relatives and friends who will forever treasure her memory. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Paulinus C. Ezeh; her children, Ogechukwu Ezeh and Edmound Ezeh; her parents, Gabriel and Eunice Okoye; and all of her siblings Suzanne Nmaduka, Godwin Okoye, Raymond Okoye, Alice Ekwerem, Rosa Nmaduka and Joseph Okoye, of whom she was the last remaining.

Theresa was a woman of grace, intelligence, and unwavering faith. She inspired all who knew her with her elegance, wisdom, and steadfast devotion to family and community. Honored by St. Matthew’s Catholic Church as the Ideal Model of a Mother/Father Combo, she embodied the virtues of love, sacrifice, and strength, living her life as a true matriarch and guiding light.

Her life was a tapestry woven with compassion and service. She was a philanthropist, humanitarian, and educator whose gentle spirit touched countless lives. As a mother, she nurtured with love; as a cook, she nourished with care; as a teacher and principal, she shaped generations with knowledge and discipline. Her resilience and dependability made her a pillar of strength, and her trustworthy nature drew many to her for counsel and comfort.

Theresa’s gifts extended beyond the classroom. As a marriage and spiritual counselor, she mended hearts and homes. A devoted prayer warrior, she interceded for those in need, embodying the essence of a virtuous woman of God. Her legal acumen as a mediator brought peace and resolution to many, leaving behind a legacy of justice and compassion.

Her educational journey was remarkable. She studied at Maria Regina and the Federal College of Education in Ekiadolor, earning her NCE, and later attained her Master’s degree from the University of Ibadan. She retired as Principal of Central School Umuchu, where she also served as Zonal Head of all primary schools in the region. Her leadership extended to the church, where she tirelessly worked as Chairperson of the project committee at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, spearheading the completion of the church hall in Umuchu.

Theresa’s career as an educator spanned institutions such as Ideal Girls Secondary School in Lagos, Eresonye Primary School in Benin (where she served as Assistant Principal), Western Boys (Arewele) High School in Benin, Community Primary School Umuchu, and Central Schools Umuchu, where she was both Headmistress and Zonal Head. In each role, she left an indelible mark on her students and colleagues, shaping lives with her wisdom and dedication.

Her leadership within women’s organizations and religious groups was equally impactful. She served faithfully as president, vice president, secretary, and financial secretary, contributing to community development and uplifting those around her.

Theresa’s life was a testament to faith, resilience, and love. She was a legend, a hero, and a role model whose influence will endure for generations. As we honor her memory, we hold tightly to the love she bestowed upon us and the lessons she imparted. She will forever remain a beacon of strength, love, and unwavering faith in our hearts.
