Wayne “Dickey” Armstead, a loving father, cherished sibling, and unforgettable friend, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, at The Crossing. Born on June 5, 1954, in New Orleans, Wayne was a bright candle of joy and warmth, whose spirit touched the hearts of many over his remarkable life.
Wayne dedicated a significant portion of his journey to serving as an International Longshoreman, where he earned the respect of colleagues and made lifelong connections in the industry. Known affectionately by the nicknames “Dickey” and “Gator39”,he brought his outgoing personality to every endeavor he undertook. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and he found immense joy in supporting his children and grandchildren through their pursuits.
A devoted father, Wayne leaves behind his beloved children: Darryl Lavigne (Janice), Danyel Bernard (Kevin), Schantayln Dickens (James), and Alecia Armstead Adams.. His legacy continues to shine brightly through his grandchildren, whom he adored and cherished deeply. Wayne treated his siblings and many nieces and nephews with boundless affection, making each family gathering a cherished memory infused with laughter and love.
Wayne had a passion for CB radio, where he was known as “Gator39”,” and could often be found engaging in spirited conversations with fellow enthusiasts. An avid Saints fan, he celebrated the highs and lows of each season, embodying the true spirit of camaraderie that sports inspire. Additionally, Wayne enjoyed bowling, not only as a pastime, but as an opportunity to connect with friends and family alike, creating moments that will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who loved him.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Roosevelt and Lizzie Armstead, two brothers, Roosevelt Armstead Jr. and Tyrone Armstead, one sister Beverly Armstead Williams, and his grandson, DeJonta Williams. Their absence will be felt profoundly, yet their spirits will be woven into the fabric of his family’s memories.
A gathering to honor Wayne’s life and legacy will take place on June 28, 2025, at St James Baptist Church 1105 North 44th St Baton Rouge, La 70802. A viewing will be held from 10:00 AM to 1100 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Friends, family, and all who knew Wayne are invited to share in celebrating the life of a remarkable man who profoundly influenced those fortunate enough to have known him.
